Welcome To The Write Team!
About Me
I have spent 30 years in the writing and public relations/communications business in East Texas, starting with my first job as a sports editor at the Marshall News Messenger in Marshall, Texas. During my five years at my hometown newspaper, I covered area high schools and briefly served as city editor. During my time there, I won three Texas Managing Editor Awards for my writing, including a series on the greatest moments in Marshall Maverick football (“Mavericks of the Millennium”) and a piece on Marshall football legend Y.A. Tittle.
In the summer of 2000, I moved to East Texas Baptist University, where I became the university’s first full-time Sports Information Director just before the Tigers brought back their college football program for the first time in 50 years. For 12 years, I covered ETBU football, men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, baseball, and softball, serving as the athletic program’s chief statistician and media contact. I wrote, designed, and edited the university’s athletic media guides and managed the ETBU athletic website, updating it with news, stats, and information.
In August of 2012, I transitioned to public relations in the public school system and became the Director of Communications at my alma mater, Marshall ISD. I served as the district spokesperson through two school bond campaigns, the second of which led to MISD passing its first bond election in 30 years in 2015. The $109.2 million bond program funded the construction of three new elementary schools and a new junior high school for Marshall's students and community. I also redesigned the district’s website and oversaw MISD’s communications efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021.
Just before the pandemic, a series of events led me to consult with smaller school districts in the area, and that’s how Write Team Services was born. Today, I work as a consultant, assisting smaller districts and small businesses that may not have the budget for a full-time public relations staff but still need the services I provide. With my years of experience in print journalism and over 20 years in PR, I help my clients tell their stories more effectively, reaching their customers and communities.
Contact me today, and let me help you tell YOUR story to your stakeholders, your customers, and your community.
Write Team Services is a dream come true for my family and I. I have enjoyed a long and successful career as a writer, both as a print journalist and as a public relations professional. This journey began for us in October of 2019 when, through a series of events a small, local school district reached out to me for some help while working through a couple of situations they were dealing with in their district.
There are no magical fixes, no pixie dust that can solve all of our issues in terms of serving our community and developing a public image and trust through public relations activities. However, in most situations, there are ways to mitigate the damage and work through events so that the lasting damage is minimal and trust and transparency began to be repaired. It all begins with a plan, and 100 percent effort into execution of the plan.
Through my work with small districts in our area I came to ask myself: how many similar districts are there around the state of Texas and beyond that face similar hurdles and issues that come up but do not have the budget to bring on a full-time staff member to manage and execute a public relations plan? To handle their messaging, to share the good news and accomplishments of their district or organization?
There are hundreds of great stories that take place in Texas classrooms every single day, yet many of those stories go untold or unrecognized simply because there aren’t enough resources to add that extra full-time employee dedicated solely to PR and communications.
So that’s what I do now with Write Team. I work with those districts to develop and execute an effective public relations and information program to share with their stakeholders. This includes being available for general consulting on any issues that may arise throughout the school year, and how to respond to those issues in a way that creates public confidence in school leadership. This includes website and social media management, and also general writing and marketing activities that keep your local school district in the forefront. I help you focus on the good, the positive and the uplifting activities of your students, while also helping navigate through times that may not be so pleasant.
I help you tell your story.
I am also available to help small business owners promote their businesses and increase their customer base with an increased communications presence. Churches, nonprofits, civic organizations -- I can help you tell your story.
That, in a nutshell, is what I do at Write Team. I pledge to be there when you need me, and to strive to make sure you are more than just a spot on the map. I am here to assist you in any way I can, and it is a pleasure and an honor for the opportunity to serve alongside you in your schools, churches, and businesses.
